  6. Congratulations, Adam. This is awesome. And thanks for having such a generous giveaway.

This year I have been very lucky to read some very good books. But my favorite so far must be One Hundred Years of Solitude that I read as part of the Classics Club. The most wonderful, magical read so far this year.

    Like

    • Oh, I’m glad a Classics Club book turned into a favorite! I like Marquez but I haven’t read this one, yet… I’ll try to move it up on my list.

  7. What a lovely giveaway – very generous of you! But wow – favourite book of the year so far? That’s difficult – at the moment “The Gambler” by Dostoevsky, “Travels of a Capitalist Lackey” by Fred Basnett, “A History of Capitalism According to the Jubilee Line” by John O’Farrell and “Anna Karenina” come to mind. But then there’s all the Bulgakov and Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky I’ve been reading…. Almost impossible to pick one!

    Like

    • Another vote for Dostoevsky! That makes me happy. Anna Karenina was great, too – but I haven’t read the others. I’ll look into them.

  13. Oh, darn. Messed that up. Okay. Favorite book from 2013? Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell. As I say in my review (linked), this is as fine a historical mystery as I have ever read. Well-researched, well-plotted, and absolutely absorbing. One of the few books I’ve given a five-star rating to this year.

I haven’t actually read much so far this year – it’s been a slow one for some reason – but I think my favourite of the bunch has to be ‘The Locked Ward: Memoirs of a Psychiatric Orderly’ by Dennis O’Donnell. Some memorable moments, lots of larger-than-life characters, and a kind of honest yet soothing reassurance that should I (or anyone I know) ever need to spend time in a ward like this we’d be in good hands!

  16. Wow Adam Congrats on the 5,000 you are doing something right. My favorite book that I have read so far this year is The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum. I passed that book on but told the person I gave it to that I want it back to go on my “keep forever” shelves.

  22. Thanks for the giveaway and congrats on the 5000 subscriptions!! I’m finding quite tough to pick my favourite book so far this year. There have been many… I can’t decide between Atwood’s “The Blind Assassin”, De Bernières “The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts” (usually I’m not very fond of magical realism but this novel… it’s brilliant!) and “All Souls” by Javier Marías (because he has a quite special and beautiful style).

Btw, my twitter account is private, would you mind if I sent you the link to the screencap?

    Like

    • So much talk about The Blind Assassin this year! I loved The Handmaid’s Tale, but that’s the only Atwood book that I’ve read, so far. Her new one (MaddAdam) sounds really good, too.

And don’t worry about the screencap – I know ya. 🙂

      Like

      • I read The Handmaid’s Tale about a year ago and loved it! And I must say I even enjoyed The Blind Assassin more! About MaddAdam I read the first volume this summer and it blew me away, in more or less the same way The Handmaid’s Tale does. I mean it has nothing to do with it – I actually find it more ‘scary’ – but it is also an invention of a near future which (unfortunately) isn’t that unlikely.

        Like

      • Okay, I’ll definitely be getting my hands on MaddAdam soon.

The best book I’ve read so far this year has probably been The Fault in Our Stars. I didn’t love it in such a heartfelt way as I’ve been hearing from others, but it was very riveting, and I haven’t read much else that has stacked up well this year. I need to be finding better books, I think!

  53. Wow, 5000 subscribers, what a number! Congratulations!

My favorite book so far is Natsume Soseki’s Kusamakura. It’s a classic, but I read this in 2013. Do you like Asian literature btw? Have you read any work of Soseki before? Soseki’s Kusamakura is pretty much monologue, but I personally adore this story, sooo much. My own copy is a well-loved one (full of highlights, dogears, crumples…). People say that it is a haiku book, and Soseki himself mentioned that he wanted to give an impression of beauty to those who read this book – so no plot lines, or significant character development…

Perhaps it is not for everyone, but anyway, if you have time, you should check his work.

Again, thank you for the fantastic giveaway!
