Adam Burgess
As July comes to an end, it’s time to look toward August and our next read! This month, we’ll be reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen! I’ve chosen this one to coincide with my annual Austen in August event, which also begins on August 1st.
Don’t forget: We have a Goodreads group! And we’re using #CBAM2017 to chat on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
About the Book*:
Northanger Abbey is often referred to as Jane Austen’s Gothic parody. Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers give the story an uncanny air, but one with a decidedly satirical twist.
The story’s heroine is Catherine Morland, an innocent seventeen-year-old woman from a country parsonage. While spending a few weeks in Bath with a family friend, Catherine meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney, who invites her to visit his family estate, Northanger Abbey.
Once there, Catherine, a great reader of Gothic thrillers, lets the shadowy atmosphere of the old mansion fill her mind with terrible suspicions. What is the mystery surrounding the death of Henry’s mother? Is the family concealing a terrible secret within the elegant rooms of the Abbey? Can she trust Henry, or is he part of an evil conspiracy? Catherine finds dreadful portents in the most prosaic events, until Henry persuades her to see the peril in confusing life with art.
Schedule:
Feel free to read at your own pace, post at your own pace (or not at all), and drop by to comment/chat about the book at any point. The schedule above is just the one I plan to use in order to keep myself organized and to provide some standard points and places for anyone who is reading along to get together and chat.
Hallo, Hallo everyone! 🙂
I originally had hoped to participate more with the Classics Adam was reading this year – however, I just spied Northanger Abbey as August’s selection – somehow I had forgotten this was the monthly read! I am wicked happy because I was including this on my #AustenInAugust list! I haven’t formalised my plans yet – only gave a wink & nod about what I’m doing during #TheSundayPost (today/yesterday) over on my blog! I am definitely going to participate via Twitter with reading check-ups and coming back to the blog here to see what is going on as well! I am not on GR – so I might miss a few things but that is okay! I simply want to focus on reading more Austen this year – and knowing a few of us are doing a RAL for this one will be extra sweet!
I’ll be posting on the schedule Adam has mentioned over on my blog, too! Except I’ll include a ‘first week’ with ‘Northanger Abbey’ with my next #TheSundayPost whilst mentioning where I am as I resume my #WWWeds posts this week, too! Looking forward to seeing whose reading this!

Oy! Not again – I keep *forgetting!* Blessed you tagged me a few times on your lovely blog whilst giving me the reminder by PM, too! Wicked thrilled to know the ‘date’ of my GP – however, I think the reason I keep getting tripped up is because #AustenInAugust is used as much as a reference on my blog for the event itself inasmuch as how we originally were tagging it. I’ve made various notes to myself to remind me of the RBR at the end! Let’s hope I keep remembering!! lol

I haven’t been overly stellar with my participation either, but I’m definitely in for this one! I’m going to be making an extra effort to keep up. You know that will be incredibly hard for me…baby steps. lol

I am looking forward to this month and getting to know Austen better. I will check out as many blogs as I can. I kind of got ahead of myself and finished Northanger Abbey last week. Whoa, I loved it, but what a roller coaster! I plan on reading Mansfield Park this month as well as a book called, A Walk with Jane Austen, by Lori Smith.

I think this is my one and only classic that I’ve managed to read with you this year – the best laid plans….yadda yadda yadda!
NA is a quick, easy and fun read & just what I needed last week.
