Austen in August: Master Post!

Welcome to the Master Post for Austen In August! This is a one-month event focused on all things Jane Austen, including her primary texts, any re-imaginings of her works, biographies, critical texts, etc.  In early July, I announced sign-ups for the event, and was very surprised by the overwhelming response from all different types of readers & bloggers! I know many of you, like me, have been anxious to get started – so thank you all for your interest, for signing-up, and for spreading the word. 

I have a lot of things planned for this month-including giveaways, guest posts, and, of course, my own reading and reviewing of Jane Austen works. First, let’s talk logistics.

At the bottom of this post is a “Mister Linky” widget. Whenever you review a book or write a post related to the event, please link it on this master post. Please include the title or subject of whatever your post is AND your blog name in the “Name” section of the link. It should look something like: “Master Post (Roof Beam Reader).” This will ensure that all the links are in a similar format, and that others will know what your post is about before they click on it. I will make sure that the button on the right side of my blog will take you to this post. Please make sure to only link-up your posts on this main list!

Whenever you link a post, you will become eligible to win the giveaways that I will be hosting here throughout the month.  The only way to be entered for these prizes is to make sure your posts are linked-up here (this includes reviews of the books you’ve read, commentary on Austen topics, giveaways, or any other posts directly related to this event).

There are also going to be quite a few giveaways hosted by participants of the event (thank you for your generosity!).  Specific details for each of these giveaways may be different, so be sure to read the rules on those giveaway posts carefully and enter if you are interested!  For any of the giveaways, here or at other participants’ blogs, you will need to be pre-registered (before August 1st) for this event in order to win.

  5. I’m so glad I decided to join in on the fun. I haven’t even done much apart from a first post, and I’m already loving it.
    My first read is going to be Love and Freindship. It’s a quick and easy read from the looks of it, something to start me off with and work my way up to the longer reads.

  6. I’m starting with Emma. Just realised that I did read a Dutch translation oodles of years ago… somehow I really loved it when I was a romantic teen. Now, I’m still finding my way. I guess I’ve become too cynical for lurve o___o

    • Haha. Well, I actually think Austen is a bit more satirical than she is genuinely romantic; sure, most of the love stories do work themselves out in the end, but it’s usually in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. Maybe that will help? 😉

    • Just spent a few pages with Mrs. John Dashwood and can already tell that 1) I’m going to despise her and 2) I’m going to be infuriated with John Dashwood if he remains such a weakling. Oh, and 3) I’m likely going to applaud Austen’s characterization skills, again.

    • I’ve seen a couple of interesting-sounding biographies being mentioned… wish I had time to add one to my planned reading for the month, but there’s just no way. I’ll have to live/read/learn vicariously through you all!

  18. How lovely! I’m actually doing an Austen Marathon this month! 🙂 I just finished Sense and Sensibility and have just started on Pride & Prejudice. (I’m going by publication date, you see.) But yay! Gotta love Austen!

  22. I just wanted to express how thankful I am for this event! Its only been two days of reading for me and as a new blogger and my first group event like this, I’m overwhelmed with the inspiration of knowing I’m reading with a whole community of readers. Its so inspiring and it has taken me quite by surprise at the way it has motivated me. I have committed myself to read at least 30 pages a night so I can hopefully read Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility this month. It has been such a joy already! Thank you Adam for hosting this wonderful event!

  25. Adam, I hope that you (and everyone else that’s currently reading it) are enjoying Sense and Sesibility as much as I am. I’m in LOVE with the BBC/Masterpiece version of it so I know the story, but the book has a lot that the movie left out. This might be replacing P&P as my favorite Austen (even though P&P is the only other one I’ve read!)

    I’m not re-reading any Jane Austen these days, but I’m leafing through new Austen-inspired fiction and non-fiction to review on my blog.
    By the way, my favourite Austen novel is Persuasion.

  34. I am participating in the Austen in August Reading Event hosted by Roof Beam Reader….I’m starting with “History of England”…so wickedly funny and she was only 16! Also, Austen in Boston is reading Gone with the Wind for August and I have a week to finish it…ugh!

    • I just recently received Imperfect Bliss from the publisher… I wish I had time to squeeze it in, but Mansfield Park is going very slowly for me! I don’t think I’ll make it by end of month.

    • Great! I’m glad to hear it! Persuasion and Emma will be the last two Austen works that I’ll need to read at some point… I’ll be done with everything else (novels, short works, unfinished, works, etc.) as of this month. 🙂
